Vectors summary

Vectors describe movement with both size and direction. This Vectors summary pairs the IGCSE Vectors worksheet with its answers PDF: practise from the sheet (diagrams included), then check every method in the solutions.

Key learning points

  • A column vector (xy)\begin{pmatrix}x\\y\end{pmatrix} means xx right (negative = left) and yy up (negative = down).
  • Arrow notation AB→\overrightarrow{AB} is the displacement from A to B; BA→=−AB→\overrightarrow{BA}=-\overrightarrow{AB}.
  • Bold/underlined letters name the same displacement in column form.
  • Add/subtract component-wise; multiply by a scalar to stretch or reverse.
  • Magnitude ∣a∣=x2+y2|\mathbf{a}|=\sqrt{x^2+y^2}; geometry links use midpoints and parallelograms.

Worked example 1 — Addition

a=(21)\mathbf{a}=\begin{pmatrix}2\\1\end{pmatrix}, b=(3−4)\mathbf{b}=\begin{pmatrix}3\\-4\end{pmatrix}. a+b\mathbf{a}+\mathbf{b}?

aba+ba + b

Working

(5−3)\begin{pmatrix}5\\-3\end{pmatrix}

Add components.

Worked example 2 — Midpoint vector

M is midpoint of ABAB. Express OM→\overrightarrow{OM} if OA→=a\overrightarrow{OA}=\mathbf{a}, OB→=b\overrightarrow{OB}=\mathbf{b}.

Working

OM→=12(a+b)\overrightarrow{OM}=\tfrac{1}{2}(\mathbf{a}+\mathbf{b})

Position vector of a midpoint.

Worked example 3 — Scalar multiple

3(2−1)3\begin{pmatrix}2\\-1\end{pmatrix}.

Working

(6−3)\begin{pmatrix}6\\-3\end{pmatrix}

Multiply each component.

Worked example 4 — Magnitude

Find ∣(34)∣\left|\begin{pmatrix}3\\4\end{pmatrix}\right|.

Working

55

32+42\sqrt{3^2+4^2}.

Worked example 5 — Reverse

If AB→=v\overrightarrow{AB}=\mathbf{v}, then BA→\overrightarrow{BA}?

Working

−v-\mathbf{v}

Opposite direction.

Worked example 6 — Successive translations

A point is translated by (41)\begin{pmatrix}4\\1\end{pmatrix} then (−13)\begin{pmatrix}-1\\3\end{pmatrix}. Find one equivalent translation.

Working

(41)+(−13)=(34)\begin{pmatrix}4\\1\end{pmatrix}+\begin{pmatrix}-1\\3\end{pmatrix}=\begin{pmatrix}3\\4\end{pmatrix}

Order does not matter for free-vector addition — both slides land on the same image.

Scaffolded Learning Sheet and answers (PDFs)

This page is a short, searchable overview for revision and search engines. Use the Scaffolded Learning Sheet first, then the Answers PDF for a full written solution. The printable PDFs remain the main classroom resource.
